Granted, a Tiburon equipped with the torquey, 2.7-liter V-6 is as quick as an Integra Type-R on the straights. While it was never intended to compete with the likes of the Acura Integra Type-R, the Hyundai Tiburon could have been the modern-day Eagle Talon. The overall setup of the Korean coupe was not as sporty as that of the T230-generation Toyota Celica as the Hyundai is larger in size, heavier, and clearly designed with some comfort in mind. The Tiburon’s chassis is capable of handling more power, especially after Porsche’s tweaks to the suspension and steering on both the first and second-generation Tiburon. The fastest documented quarter-mile time for a stock Tiburon was 15.4 seconds at 90.7 mph (146 km/h) by MotorWeek. The quickest version of the Tiburon, which is a V-6 with a six-speed manual, was clocked at 7.0 seconds for the 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) sprint, as reported by MotorTrend. A five-speed, close-ratio manual, a six-speed, which was offered only for the V-6, and a four-speed automatic that comes from Mitsubishi and does not favor performance or fuel economy. Transmission-wise, there were three choices.
The Greek market got a 1.6-liter turbocharged version with 145 horsepower (106.6 kilowatts) and 140 pound-feet (190 Nm) while the Asian market got a 1.8-liter unit with 132 horsepower (97 kilowatts) and 122.4 pound-fee (166 Nm). To add insult to the injury, the 1.6-liter engine was as thirsty as the 2.0-liter. Both were naturally aspirated and produced between 136 and 172 horsepower (100 – 126.5 kilowatts) and 132 to 180 pound-feet (179 – 245 Nm).Įven more disappointing was the 1.6-liter engine offered in Europe, which provided 105 horsepower (77.2 kilowatts) and 105.5 pound-feet (143 Nm). In most markets, a 2.0-liter inline-four and a 2.7-liter V-6 were offered. Depending on the region, there were a few engine options. The Tiburon, especially in its last model years, looked extremely sporty, but what was under the hood could not live up to the aesthetics. Unfortunately, the car was all show and had little to no go.
Moreover, with 14.8 cubic feet (420 liters) of cargo capacity and a rear hatchback, the Tiburon is surprisingly practical. The GK Phase III (2007 – 2009), in particular, is a head turner even 14 years later. Granted, the second-generation Tiburon was said to have been inspired by the Ferrari 456 GT. Hyundai worked with Italian design studio Pininfarina, but contrary to the countless internet rumors, the Tiburon was designed in-house. This, among other things, meant it was affordable, simple to work on, and reliable. The Hyundai Tiburon came out in 1996 and just like the last three generations of the Toyota Celica, which shared a platform with the Corolla, the Korean coupe shared a platform with the Elantra.
